Find your Energy Performance Certificate
An Energy Performance Certificate provides information about the energy performance and efficiency of a home.
In an Energy Performance Certificate, different features of a home, including its windows, heating system, and wall insulation, are evaluated. The home is then given a score from A-G based on its features, with an “A” home being much more energy efficient than a “G” home.
Energy Performance Certificates also include estimates of the annual cost of gas and electricity and the annual carbon emissions of the property and provide information on what changes could be made to the home to improve its energy efficiency.
Energy Performance Certificates are valid for ten years, or until a newer EPC is produced. If your property does not have an EPC or its EPC has expired, you’ll need a new one before you get your property ready to sell or rent.

Use a Smart Meter
Smart meters show real-time data on a home’s electricity and gas usage. They eliminate estimated bills by sending accurate readings directly to your supplier and can unlock access to energy tariffs that offer cheaper rates at off-peak times. A smart meter can make it easier to monitor when you are using energy how to use energy more efficiently, especially if you can access cheaper off-peak energy tariffs. This not only helps you save money but also supports a greener environment by encouraging more mindful energy use.
To get a smart meter in the UK, contact your energy supplier. All energy suppliers are required to offer smart meters to all customers by the end of 2025. Installation is free, and a technician will visit your home to set it up, including an in-home display that shows your usage in pounds and pence. Once installed, you can start tracking your energy use.
