Background to the project
The Council’s approved Dock Branch Neighbourhood Masterplan identifies the ‘Argyle Quarter’ character area which is focused on Argyle Street (north of Conway Street), Market Street and its surrounds. The Masterplan sets out an opportunity and aspiration to upgrade property frontages to enhance the heritage and vibrancy of the area.
The Council is launching a capital grant scheme as part of its UK Shared Prosperity Fund Investment Plan, to help deliver small-scale improvements to shop frontages and empty properties in the Argyle Quarter area.
Eligible projects must be based within the defined area.
Funding is available to eligible businesses, charities, landlords and social enterprises to undertake capital improvements which contribute to the regeneration and sustainable growth of the area. Grants can be used to make improvements in line with the aims of the scheme.
About the project
Strand 1 includes landlords or business tenants of occupied commercial properties. Examples could include:
- repair or restoration of architectural elements
- signage, painting and lighting
- replacement of awnings or external fixtures
- removal of external shutters and replacement with toughened glass
- access improvements
Strand 2 includes landlords of empty commercial properties. It aims to bring it up to a standard to enable it to be let to a business tenant who can demonstrate realistic prospect of premises being let within 6 months of the works being completed. The funding can be used for internal and external alterations.
You can apply for both strands, where applicable. See the Eligibility Criteria section below for further guidance about planning permissions.
The applicant is responsible for covering their costs in relation to rents, business rates, utilities, other running costs, and professional or administrative costs.
