The reference library is manned by volunteers and not always open.

For specific help with your local and family history research our Local and Family History volunteer group hold drop-in sessions every Friday between 10am and 1pm. No appointment is needed.

The reference library is on the first floor and is accessible via lift.

All books, printed materials and online resources are free to look at within the reference library.

Textbooks and resources on regional, local and family history most of which are searchable via the online Catalogue. 

Find My Past, 1921 Census and British Newspaper Archive:

Available online via any public computer.

Local and specialist materials

  • Wallasey census returns in hardback from 1841 to 1871, online from 1841 to 1921 and on microfiche
  • Electoral registers from 1887 to 2012 (latest register in main library)
  • Newspapers - an archive of local papers from 1898 to 1976 (hard copy) and on microfiche up to 1995.
    Due to the fragility of the archive not all papers are available to view in hard copy. Please call to enquire.
  • Maps, including local area, from 1656
  • Trade directories - a range of dates held from 1766 to 1970
  • Cemetery records
  • Rolls of honour and monumental inscriptions
  • Council proceedings from 1887 to 2008
  • Parish records (on microfilm) and hard copy 1574 to 1812
  • The Wirral Journal 1982 to 1998
  • Wirral Reflections 1999 to 2006

Memorabilia

Outside the reference library on the first-floor landing are various model boats and memorabilia from local history. These are accessible when the main library is open.
