Council Tax Reduction for working age people

How much Council Tax Reduction can I claim?

Until 31 March 2026 Council Tax Reduction can be awarded for up to 82.5% of your Council Tax bill less:

  • any discounts you may be awarded
  • any deductions we make for other adults living with you. These people are called non-dependants

From 1 April 2026 Council Tax Reduction can be awarded for up to 50% of your Council Tax bill, less the above reductions.

How is my Council Tax Reduction worked out?

We take your weekly income (and your partners income if you have one) after any disregards have been applied, then we apply a percentage reduction to your Council Tax charge.

The tables below show the income levels and household composition applied for different percentage reductions within Bands 1 to 5. 

These income levels within the table may increase annually.

If you are in receipt of Income Support, Job Seeker's Allowance (Income Based) or Employment and Support Allowance (Income Related), discount will be awarded as shown in Band 1 - Unless Capital is more than £6,000 then no Council Tax Reduction will be awarded.

From 1 April 2026 the amount of financial support will be limited to the level of support offered for a home in Council Tax Band D.

Exclusions

When we calculate your weekly income to work out your band, we will not take into account the following:

  • Carers Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Child Maintenance
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • The Support component of Employment and Support Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payments
  • War Widows/Widowers and War Disablement Pensions

From 1 April 2026 we will take into account Carers Allowance and The Support component of Employment and Support Allowance when we calculate your weekly income.

If you are receiving Universal Credit, we will not take into account following elements of your Universal Credit award:

  • Carer Element
  • Disabled Child Element
  • Housing Element
  • Limited Capability for Work & Work Related Activity Elements
  • Child Care Element

If you are in work we will exclude £50 from your weekly household earned income before we work out how much reduction you will get.

From 1 April 2026 this amount will change to £20.

If a member of your household is disabled and in receipt of certain disability benefits, we will exclude a further £50 per week from your total weekly income.

Non-Dependant Deductions Working Age

A deduction of £5.00 will be made for other people aged 18 or over who live with you.

No deduction will be made if you or your partner are registered blind or are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance, the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment or an Armed Forces Independence Payment, or if the non dep is ignored for Council Tax purposes.
