1. General
- By participating in this scheme, you are making a donation to Wirral Borough Council to support the planting of a tree within the highway or other council-owned land.
- All trees planted through this scheme will remain the property and responsibility of Wirral Borough Council.
- Trees will typically be supplied as 8–10 cm girth (approx. 3–4 metres in height), providing immediate visual impact.
- Trees will be planted with appropriate support and protection (e.g. staking, guard, and watering infrastructure). The exact specification may vary depending on availability, site conditions, and practical considerations.
2. Planting Conditions
- For street tree applications, the proposed planting location must:
- Be on a grass verge of at least 1.5 m width
- Be free of underground or overhead utilities
- Be located away from driveways and dropped kerbs, street furniture (e.g. signs, lighting columns) as well as junctions and pedestrian crossings
Payment will only be requested once an application has been reviewed and approved.
Applications should be submitted by 16 October to be considered for planting within the forthcoming planting season (November–February). Applications received after this date will be carried forward to the next planting season.
Once a tree has been planted, donations are non-refundable.
3. Tree Establishment and Maintenance
- Trees may fail after planting due to factors outside of the Council’s control, including (but not limited to):
- Vandalism
- Vehicle damage
- Disease
- Extreme weather conditions
- Insufficient watering
- Wirral Borough Council will:
- Replace a tree once within the first two years if it fails to establish
- Replace a tree once within the first two years where it is lost due to vandalism
4. Ongoing Management
Trees planted along highways or adjacent to footways will be managed to maintain statutory clearance requirements, including pruning of low branches where necessary.
Where a tree presents a significant risk to public safety or property, the Council reserves the right to undertake appropriate work, including pruning or removal.
Any decision to remove a tree will be made in accordance with the Council’s Tree Safety Management Strategy. Where appropriate, a replacement tree will be planted in a suitable location.
