Grave fees for residents of Wirral

Wirral Council subsidises the maintenance of cemeteries. This is funded through payment of Council Tax. Residents are provided with a reduction on the full cost of the service. The fees shown below include this reduction.

Definition of a resident

A resident is defined as:

  • any person who has, or at the time of death had, a permanent address within the boundary of Wirral Council, or who had lived permanently within Wirral in the preceding 5 years
  • in the case of a child, a parent who meets the above criteria
  • any person in the care of Wirral Council, Social Care

Purchase of Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial

The Exclusive Right of Burial allows the right of burial within a grave for a period of 99 years (unless otherwise stated). The ownership of the cemetery land, including the grave surface, remains with Wirral Council and is subject to council policy and the cemetery Rules and Regulations.

The registered owner of a grave is the only person entitled to request for a burial to take place of for any memorial work to take place.

Natural Burial Grave – for 50 years

Graves within our Natural Burial area are prepared to accept two full interments and up to two sets of cremated remains.

These graves are planned to recreate an eco-friendly environment and to encourage and protect wildlife as such do not contain traditional memorials.

Cremated remains lawn grave

Cremated remains rock niche grave (Frankby Cemetery only) A rockery-style grave only available within Frankby Cemetery. For the burial of ashes and includes the right to place an approved plaque. Up to 3 sets of ashes £910
Individual baby grave

A smaller grave which will enable the burial of a baby up to the age of 1 year old.

For babies who are stillborn or lived up to the age of 1 year of age, the Government introduced the Children’s Funeral Fund in 2019. This fund allows Wirral Council to claim the fees for the cremation.
