Road adoption agreements

  • a public road owned by the council is called an 'adopted' road
  • a privately-owned road is an 'unadopted' road'

New roads that have been constructed usually become adopted by way of an agreement between the developer and the council. Otherwise, we have no responsibility for maintaining an unadopted road.

Sometimes the council can take over the maintenance responsibility for a private road or newly created street and make it an adopted road.
