If you move into a property with no bin, or if your bin has gone missing, you can request a new bin.
Charges for new bins
There is a cost for some new bins (from 1 April 2024):
- new green general waste bins are £45
- new grey recycling bins are £22
- new brown garden waste bins are £45 (only available if you are a current subscriber)
- If you are a landlord or developer, VAT will be applied to the cost of the bin
Request an extra bin if you already have one
You can request an additional bin if you meet the following criteria:
- there are six or more permanent residents at the property
- you have extra waste because of a medical condition
- there are children in nappies at the property (a child in nappies will count as two residents, towards the 6 or more criteria above)
The usual charge will apply for a new bin to be provided, unless the need is due to a medical condition.
You will need to provide evidence to support your application, such as a letter from your doctor.

The costs (from 1 April 2024) are:
- additional green general waste bins are £45 each
- additional grey recycling bins are £22
Request bins if you are a householder
Request bins if you are a landlord or property developer
Landlords can request wheelie bins for new and existing properties. Requests for extra bins must meet the criteria outlined above.
Property developers can request bins for new properties. Bins should not be requested until the street has been named and the properties are ready to be occupied.
Payment for wheelie bins must be made upfront by credit or debit card. VAT will be added to the cost of all bins for landlords and developers.
Request bins if you are a landlord or developer
Bulk bins for flats
You can request large bulk bins to be shared by residents, for example in flats. The property will need to be assessed to see if it is suitable.
Bulk bins (1,100 litre capacity, with a lid) cost £116.55 (from 1 April 2024) per bin per year to lease from our contractor. This is for the maintenance, repair and cleaning of the bin.
Why is there a charge for new bins?
The council does not have the budget to pay for new green bins. Many other councils also charge for new bins.
We are legally permitted to charge for this service. This falls under Section 46 of the Environmental Protection Act (1990).
The charges apply to all households, housing providers and new developments. All charges will need to be paid upfront by credit or debit card.
Can I buy my own bin?
If you want to purchase your own bin independently of the council, then it must be:
- a wheeled bin
- compliant with the EN 840 standard
- either 140 litre or 240 litre capacity
- the correct colour for the type of waste that it will contain
If your bin does not meet these criteria, it will not be emptied by the council.
