What is Pranayama?
Prana = ‘life force energy’; Yama = ‘control or mastery of’.
Under normal circumstances, the body breathes automatically, but in pranayama that thing that is you changes your breathing pattern deliberately. The relative concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide are altered. This innervates the body's nervous and circulatory systems as well as its internal organs.
The yogis teach pranayama to still the mind as a prelude to meditation. Pranayama is a powerful tool to relieve mental distress, sleep issues, breathing difficulties, and age-related degeneration and an effective path to realised mindfulness.
