Yin yoga targets the connective tissues, such as ligaments, bones and joints of the body.

Yoga practised in the West is mostly yang or muscular in nature. Yin is practiced with the muscles relaxed and the postures held for a few minutes. Yin postures are floor postures that primarily work the hips and low back. Yin is characterised by gentle traction, stressing the ligaments to maintain their length and strength.
