Current status in Wirral
The local COVID alert level is Very high.
Wirral saw a rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases from September onwards. Although numbers now appear to be reducing slightly, the borough still has extremely high rates compared to the summer.
At the end of August, we had around 90 cases per week. This compares to the current level of 525 cases per week (in the 7 days to 16 November 2020, the most recent day for which figures are available).
There is still widespread community transmission, with new positive COVID-19 cases being seen across Wirral and in all age groups.
Weekly data from the Office for National Statistics (published on 17 November 2020) showed there had been 94 registered deaths in Wirral. 24% of these (or 23 in actual numbers) were COVID-19 deaths.
