A specially convened meeting of Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council took place on 21 March 2022. At this meeting, the council resolved to move to a scheme for whole council (or ‘all-out’) elections with effect from the elections to be held in May 2023.
This means that as of May 2023 (and every four years afterwards), elections will be held for all seats on Wirral Council at the same time. At the moment, the council elects a third of its members in each of three years out of four.
The council made this resolution (which required a two thirds majority) after consulting with residents and organisations and following a recommendation made by the Minister of State for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in her letter to the Council of 2 November 2021.
Minutes from the council meeting can be viewed, together with the report taken to the extraordinary meeting of the council, the results of the consultation exercise and this Explanatory Document web page.
The resolution was made under section 34 of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007.
This explanatory document (web page) is published in accordance with the requirements of section 35 of that Act. This document is also available for inspection between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, at Birkenhead Town Hall, Mortimer Street, Birkenhead, Wirral CH41 5EU.
