To make a payment you will need your Council Tax account number. You can find this on your Council Tax bills and notices. It is usually 8 digits long, starting with an 8 or 9.
All methods of payment except Direct Debit may take up to five days to reach your account.
Direct Debit
The best way to pay Council Tax is by Direct Debit.
To set up a Direct Debit you will need:
- your Council Tax account number
- your bank account number and sort code – you must be the account holder and authorised to set up a Direct Debit
Payments can be taken on the 5th, 15th, 20th or 28th of each month. Payments can be made over 10 or 12 monthly instalments.
Set up or change a Direct Debit
Not all bank or building society accounts are suitable for Direct Debit. If you are not sure, check with your bank or building society.
You only need to set up a Direct Debit once. New applications for Direct Debits every year are not needed.
Payments are covered by the Direct Debit guarantee.
Changing or cancelling a Direct Debit
If you need to change your Direct Debit, do it at least 7 days before your usual payment date.
Changing it too close to your payment date may cause two payments to be taken in the same month.
To be safe, allow 14 days before your account is normally charged for any changes to go through.
If you are not sure, it's best to wait until after your next payment has been taken before making changes.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society. You should also let us know.
