Biodiversity and Net Gain strategy 2023-2028 - vision statement

The Biodiversity and Net Gain strategy envisions a thriving, interconnected ecosystem, harmoniously co-existing with our vibrant communities in Wirral.

In the five year span of this strategy, we are committed to nurturing biodiversity, enhancing our natural heritage and embracing ecological resilience.

Through robust planning, development that gives back more than it takes, and passionate community involvement, we aim to restore habitats, bolster species populations and protect our vibrant ecosystems.

Under this strategy, Wirral will become a beacon of environmental stewardship and best practice, where the wonder of nature enrich our lives, where biodiversity flourishes, and where future generations inherit a thriving, ecologically balanced Wirral.

  • to inform decision making and establish a robust governance and monitoring framework for biodiversity actions

Overarching aims

This strategy aims to:

  • establish a robust Biodiversity Action Plan for Wirral
  • outline compliance with Biodiversity Net Gain legislation
  • engage our residents and communities to take action for biodiversity in Wirral
  • embed biodiversity considerations in everything we do in Wirral Council

How Wirral Council meets its Biodiversity duty

Wirral Council must follow the Environment Act 2021. This law says we must explain what we are doing to protect and improve nature in Wirral.

Our Biodiversity Duty Report shows the actions we are taking. It explains:

  • our policies that support nature
  • our projects that help plants, animals, and habitats
  • our work with partners and local groups
  • our plans for the future

This report is part of our ambition to bring nature back and support healthy ecosystems. We want to make sure that caring for wildlife and habitats is part of all our work as a council.
