Love your leftovers

Calling all aspiring chefs, multi-tasking parents and those who remember being raised on the ‘waste not, want not’ culture - Wirral Council is looking for local foodies to share their tastiest, most frugal recipes.

As part of the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign, the Council is launching a competition to find a selection of recipes that either make use of leftover ingredients or are an example of excellent batch cooking, that is making a large portion of one dish that can divided up and used to make up several quick meals at a later date.

The aim is to inspire home cooks and budding chefs alike to come up with some delicious recipes that turn everyday leftovers into tasty meals, and to encourage us to love our food and reduce the amount we waste.

Cllr Brian Kenny, Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “It makes sense financially as well as environmentally to make full use of what’s lying in our fridges and cupboards before they have to be thrown away. The idea of the competition is to find out what kind of meals people are creating out there using their leftovers and encourage others to give their recipes a try or even come up with their own dishes.”

The six winning recipes will be published as recipe cards for distribution across Wirral as well as being available to download on the Council’s website, while the successful creators will also win a Gourmet Farmer and Chef Night with former Masterchef winner Claire Lara and Andrew Pimbley at Claremont Farm on Saturday 9th July 2012.

The recipes can be anything from a traditional scouse or lasagne that can be used twice or frozen for a later date, or your own unique but delicious leftover recipe, a dessert such as bread and butter pudding from bread that is slightly past its best, or a local dish using locally sourced ingredients that you may have a surplus of.

To enter, send your full recipe ingredients and method along with your name and address to engage@wirral.gov.uk or by post to Corporate Marketing, Wirral Council, Brighton Street, Wallasey, Wirral, CH44 8ED, by Friday 9th March 2012.
