Young people invited to opening of ‘new generation’ Youth Hubs in Wirral
Wirral young people are being invited to the official opening of Wirral’s four new youth ‘hubs’.
The Youth Hubs will operate in four Wirral Youth Centres in response to calls from young people for more modern facilities.
Four major ‘Happenings’ are taking place to officially launch each of the four Youth Hubs, these will be held on:
Wallasey Youth Hub Tuesday 15th June, 7pm - 9pm
(Wallasey Fire Station)
Birkenhead Youth Hub Thursday 17th June, 7pm - 9pm
(Shaftesbury Youth Club)
West Wirral Youth Hub Thursday 24th June, 7pm - 9pm
(West Kirby Youth Club)
South Wirral Youth Hub Monday 28th June, 7pm - 9pm
(Eastham Youth Club)
Each ‘happening’ will feature a number of events, with an official opening by the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Alan Jennings, and Mike Hagen, Merseyside’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer, with music and performances including breakdancing, street dance, films, a swing vocal group and music from local bands.
The new youth hubs will initially be opened over five nights a week, including Friday and Saturday, at Shaftesbury Youth Club, Birkenhead, Wallasey Fire Station, Eastham Youth Club and West Kirby Youth Club in addition to the existing Youth Club facilities.
The new Hubs were created after national and local consultation with young people revealed that they wanted better youth club provision, open at better times. The young people asked, also said that, if the provision was better, they would not mind travelling to get to it.
Plans also include enhancing the successful Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme so that access to the scheme is available across the whole borough.
Outreach work will be re-organised into four district teams in line with the ‘super clubs.’
Said Councillor Sheila Clarke, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning: ‘This really is a breakthrough for all residents in the area. No more bored teenagers hanging around corners with nothing to do.The Hubs have been designed with a high degree of input from young people themselves who have worked with enthusiasm and passion to help establish these new facilities.
‘Through the activities, including MCing, music, drama, dance, sports, and a range of support services, the project also aims to provide new chances and opportunities for local young people and help to tackle some of their problems including training, education, and health needs.
‘They will provide a safe space for young people to spend time in and socialise as well as take advantage of the advice and other services available,’ she added.
