Definitive Map and Statement of Public Rights of Way

The Definitive Map is the legal record of public rights of way and is prepared by Wirral Council as the surveying authority. A 'way' shown on the map is conclusive evidence that the public had those rights on the relevant date of the map.

The Wirral Borough Council’s Definitive Map records public rights of way in three categories; footpath, bridleway and byway. However a 'way' shown on the map but not recorded as a public right of way could still have public rights, although its status would have to be proved.

The Definitive Statement provides a description of the way recorded on the Definitive Map.
