Road signs

Road signs play a vital role in assisting drivers and pedestrians on the roads and highways. They also help keep all road users safe.

Signs fall into certain groups:-

  • Regulatory signs - signs with red circles
  • Warning signs - mostly triangular
  • Direction signs - mostly rectangular. Destination and map type
  • Information signs - mostly rectangular

We are responsible for:

  • Illuminated bollards
  • Illuminated traffic signs
  • Non-illuminated traffic signs
  • Street name plates

Can I report a damaged road sign?

You can contact Streetscene or use the online reporting button "Report Road Sign" . In either case it will help us if you provide an accurate description of what the problem is and an exact location.

How soon will a faulty road sign be fixed?

This depends on the nature of the fault. Following an inspection by Council engineers any road sign defects are classed as either a ‘priority’ job or as a ‘serviceability’ job. This classification depends on a range of factors.

The serviceability jobs are ones that don’t present any immediate risk to public safety. They are still recommended for repair work, but the timescale within which they are carried out depends on the availability of funding. A list of all outstanding serviceability jobs is drawn up and reviewed on a monthly basis. We attempt to clear as much of this work as possible, but due to it not being urgent and budget dependent we are limited.

Can you remove a road sign?

There are certain criteria with the placing of signs. However, if you are concerned over the location of a sign for access reasons we will investigate the matter.
