Request a road closure

Road closures are needed for a number of reasons. The most common of these is a temporary arrangement for roadworks or for public utilities (gas, water, electricity suppliers) when they wish to carry out street works in the area. A weekly roadworks bulletin is published detailing all planned roadworks and streetworks.

The Council also handles temporary road closures for street parties, major Wirral events, and for building, demolition and use of heavy duty cranes, etc.

If you are planning something that could impact on traffic flow on Wirral’s roads it is essential that you contact us for advice beforehand.

How do I request a temporary road closure?

You will need to apply to the Council providing us with details of where you need the temporary closure, when you need the closure, how long for and the reason why. You will also need to pay a fee to cover legal costs and the involvement of our traffic management team in assessing and organising any necessary traffic diversions.

Your request will be assessed and if appropriate you will be asked to meet with our traffic management engineers on site.

If approved, you will be asked to take steps to inform nearby residents and the local police.

In the interests of highway safety tacit consent does not apply and temporary road closures should not be implemented on the highway unless consent has been granted.

If your request is in relation to a street party further details are available from the Street parties page.

How much are the fees?

The following fees apply;

  • For temporary road closures required to facilitate public utility streetworks and/or construction activities the fee is £860.
  • For temporary road closures required for special events the fee is £350. (the fee is reduced to £134 if the application is submitted by the AA or RAC).
  • The above fees are the standard application fees, additional charges may apply, dependent upon the scale and extent of the proposed closure and diversion route. Any additional charges will be invoiced separately.

How much notice is required?

We need a minimum of six week’s notice.

However, we would urge that you contact the Council with as much notice as possible. If your request is for a major closure, you could face a delay if the closure needs to go before elected members for approval.
