People who don't have to pay for residential care

If you move into a care home, you will usually have to pay towards the cost of your stay.

The only people who do not have to pay are:

  • people who were compulsorily detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act and are now receiving after-care in a care home. Wirral Department of Adult Social Services will pay the full cost of your stay, without any charge to you. You must be receiving aftercare under Section 117 of the Mental Health Act 1983;
  • people who require intensive nursing care. The NHS may pay for their care, free of charge, if they satisfy the local NHS criteria. This is often referred to as continuing care;
  • people who receive intermediate care in a rehabilitation centre when they are discharged from hospital. This type of care is normally limited to six weeks.

If you think you fit into one of these groups, and should not have to pay, please contact the Central Advice and Duty Team on 0151 606 2006.
