Beach Lifeguards
Wirral’s Lifeguard Service is provided to ensure, as far as is practicable, the safety of persons resorting to the foreshores whilst in the pursuit of their leisure and recreational activities.
The unit operates on a seasonal basis from Easter until the end of September with weather, tidal conditions, special events and the number of foreshore users being prime considerations for hours of duty.
The unit maintains a close working relationship with H.M. Coastguards, the R.N.L.I. and the Emergency Services and has the specialist radio equipment necessary to achieve this.
Various bathing locations are manned by fully trained and qualified lifeguards. First Aid is also a duty undertaken by qualified first aiders whilst the unit is operational during the Summer months.
During the Winter months the unit's full-time staff embark on a comprehensive and large scale Water Safety educational programme visiting local schools.
So far 14,000 school children have benefited from this service.
Coastal lifesaving appliances are also an area of the Section's responsibility and the inspection and maintenance of this equipment is undertaken on a daily basis during the season and on a weekly basis during the closed season ie. Winter months.
Other functions of the unit include the training and development of pool lifeguards, both in the terms of pool rescue qualifications and aquatic first aid, as well as delivering the departments training for First Aid at Work requirements.
