Libraries frequently asked questions

What does it cost to join the library?
Joining the library is totally free to borrow books, there are small charges to borrow sound & vision material.

How old does my child have to be to join the library?
They can join and start borrowing books as soon as they are born!

What are the library opening hours?
They are varied, information is displayed in every library and on this website.

How many books can I borrow?
You may borrow up to 16 books at a time and children can borrow up to 8.

How long can I keep them for?
You may borrow books for up to 3 weeks at a time. Loan time for other material will vary.

Do I have to pay fines?
If you return your books late, you may have to pay a fine. Currently this is 12p per day per book for adults, 1p per day per book for children and 6p per day per book for over 60's. Unless another reader wants them you can renew them either in person, by telephone, by post or via this website.

Can I use any Wirral library?
Yes your borrower ticket entitles you to borrow books and use public computers in any Wirral Library. Books can be returned to any Wirral Library.

If the book I want is not in this library can you get it for me?
If you cannot find the book you want, we will do our best to obtain it for you.

There is a small fee for this service, and a supplementary charge is payable if we have to borrow the item from another library outside Wirral.

Can I use the computers in the library?
Computers are available for use by all provided a borrower ticket is produced. Use is free for the first half hour with a small charge thereafter.

Are there any Reading Groups that I can join?
There are currently many local reading groups available. Details of reading groups are listed under each library on this website and there is also a page about Groups. Ask at your local library for more details.
