Williamson Art Gallery and Museum

Williamson Art Gallery & MuseumLocated outside the centre of Birkenhead, the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum was purpose-built and was opened in December 1928.

The building is named after John and Patrick Williamson, father and son, who each bequeathed a substantial sum of money to Birkenhead Borough Council.

The Williamson has built a strong regional reputation for the quality and variety of its exhibitions and houses the vast majority of Birkenhead's collection of art and history collections, some of which are displayed in a series of varied and well proportioned galleries.

Always on show is the largest single display of ship models in the area, focusing on Cammell Laird shipbuilders and their contribution to marine history, the Mersey Ferries and the variety of vessels that used the River Mersey when it was at its busiest.

The art collection is the largest, numbering some 6000 oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints; the collections strengths lie in British works, especially by artists with Wirral, Merseyside and North Wales connections.

In addition there are important collections of local ceramics, especially Birkenhead’s own Della Robbia Pottery (1894-1906) and 18th century Liverpool Porcelain

In addition to the permanent collection a great effort is put into sustaining a spirited programme of temporary exhibitions. Events for the Williamson will be placed into the Whats On listings.

Here too the emphasis is on a celebration of the local art scene, but work is also drawn from outside to showcase the best and present it in this outstanding environment.
