Clearance is the demolition of housing or business premises following the relocation of its previous occupiers. Most cleared sites are redeveloped, often to cater for housing demand.
Decisions about clearance are not taken lightly and the Council will always look at all viable options and work closely with owners and residents.
Clearance might happen for a number of reasons, for example, if the houses or buildings are in a poor condition, or that many are empty or unpopular because no-one wants to live or run a business in the area anymore.
Clearance is often achieved by acquiring the vast majority of properties by agreement with the owners. Where this is not possible then the use of legal powers involving Compulsory Purchase Orders may be sought.
