Neighbourhood Facelift Scheme
A Facelift Scheme is similar to a Group Repair Scheme, but also includes wider environmental improvements to a neighbourhood. Homeowners will have to make a maximum contribution of 25% of the total cost of the works.
The scheme offers Equity Renewal Loans for homeowners to carry out internal improvements to their property that the Council considers necessary.
The cost of the works, less any contribution made, have to be repaid to the Council if a property is sold within three years. However, the repayment is reduced by a third for each year following the scheme completion.
Birkenhead - Craven/Paterson Streets
Wirral Council is implementing a Neighbourhood Facelift scheme in Craven Street, Paterson Street and properties numbered 228 to 282 Claughton Road Birkenhead.
This is transforming the area by improving homes and the streetscape.
Works to the properties include roof renewal, chimney and flashing renewal, pointing of external brickwork, window and door renewal, new gutters and downspouts, boundary wall improvements and external decoration.
Works are being undertaken on 277 properties and these have been divided into 2 phases. Work on phase 1 in Claughton Road and Craven Street are ongoing.
Streetscape improvements may include tree planting, street lighting, pavement and road resurfacing and possible traffic calming measures.
Overall, the proposed works will make a major difference to the look and feel of the community in this long established neighbourhood of Birkenhead.
The scheme is part of the Housing Market Renewal programme, managed by NewHeartlands and delivered by Wirral Council, Maritime Housing and Ainsley Gommon Architects.
The Council will meet at least 75% of the cost of the work with the remaining 25% being paid by the property owner.
Low income applicants will be assessed on their ability to pay and may have their contribution reduced accordingly.
