The progress made by the Hoylake Incredible Edible Group during the summer has been nothing short of remarkable. In their short existence they have advanced in leaps and bounds to the point where they are now able to offer their first crops for free public consumption. One of their highpoints has been the completion of their work at Manor Road Train Station where they were donated space, planters, a water supply and compost by Mersey Rail. They were then able to seed the planters and now are enjoying the fruits of their labour.
The group continues to grow in strength and will be happy to supplement their numbers. Contact can be made through email to Sally or Rose at incrededhoylake@gmail.com
Since first being introduced by Keep Britain Tidy in September 2008, the programme of Big Tidy Ups has been a very successful tool in achieving a cleaner, greener, safer Wirral.
This year the Waste and Recycling Team have continued to support the campaign by helping local groups mount clean-ups in local areas. To a large extent this is supported by the Area Forums who have allocated You Decide monies to support these efforts. The areas that the teams concentrated on are those not covered by existing cleansing contracts.
Where a local area has been identified as in need of a clean the Recycling Team will identify a community group and set aside some You Decide money for the Big Tidy Up.
If you would like to participate in future ‘Big Tidy Up’ events contact Streetscene on 0151 606 2004, or email envirochamps@wirral.gov.uk.
A project was developed with support of a grant from the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority and Wirral Council to provide wormeries and other eco-gardening materials to both local schools and community gardens. The purpose is to find a better way of managing food waste and help educate children with regard to the benefits of recycling and environmental improvement. The project has proved to be very popular.
Live Wirral Wardens, Cornerstone Training and the Cherry Tree Centre have been working together to improve eco-gardens. Cornerstone Training produces wormeries manufactured from waste materials collected by the Live Wirral Wardens; the wormeries are produced using 97% recycled materials. The wormeries are used in schools and community gardens, and as part of this scheme the Cherry Tree Centre supply a Cherry Tree for the garden.
The 2010 volunteer path clearance days have been a great success. Most Thursday mornings throughout March – October 4-8 volunteers have helped with some basic cutting back of overgrown hedges on the footpaths and bridleways of Wirral. These groups have helped to maintain and improve access and cleanliness throughout the existing network.
Visit the Wirral Environmental Network website where you can find a comprehensive list of recycling facilities for a large number of household items, information on local events, sustainable transport, energy and water efficiency and smart shopping.
