Can I have an extra brown garden waste bin?

Why not compost your garden waste at home to produce good quality, free soil improver for your garden? It’s a great way to recycle your grass cuttings, small prunings, dead flowers and wind blown fruit. You can also compost fruit and vegetable peelings from your kitchen and shredded paper!

As part of a scheme, which is being run in partnership with Straight plc, low price compost bins are available to residents from as little as £15 for a 220 litre Compost Converter or £18 for a 330 litre model.
A wide range of other home composters and composting accessories are also be available to Wirral residents, including wormeries, kitchen caddies and bases as well as water butts.
Residents can take advantage of these special offers by visiting the 'Get Composting' website. Alternatively, residents can order their home compost bins by calling 0844 571 4444. On this number, residents can also receive helpful composting tips and advice from the composting team on how to get started.

You can put the following materials in your home compost bin:
- Garden waste
- Vegetable peelings
- Fruit peelings
- Tea bags
- Coffee grounds
- Egg shells
- Some ripped up un-coated cardboard like toilet and kitchen rolls and egg cartons
- Dead flowers
- Leaves
- Shredded paper
Avoid larger garden branches – they would take a long time to rot (these can go in your brown garden waste bin)

If you don’t have a garden, but want to compost your food scraps or waste from any plant pots or containers, a wormery could be the option for you! Did you know that worms eat half their weight in food every day? They will gobble up vegetable peelings, cooked and uncooked food, tea bags, egg shells, paper towels, tissues, shredded paper and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag!
There are many varieties and sizes of wormeries available. You can even buy a work top mini wormery that can sit on your worktop or windowsill.
