Green bin - Household waste
Any rubbish you put in your green wheelie bin will be sent straight to landfill; a big hole in the ground which is filled with our rubbish and then covered over.
Landfill sites create gases that can effect climate change.
We are running out of space in our landfill sites and Government are imposing strict penalties when we go over our allocated quantity.
Check the Grey bin household recycling and garden waste pages for items that we can collect in your grey and brown wheelie bins, diverting waste from landfill for recycling and composting.
Please see the bin collections page for details of your next collection.
Items not permitted in landfill
There are some materials that are not permitted in landfill as they are hazardous and require special treatment before disposal. These items cannot be collected in your green household waste wheelie bin. Some Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) are able to accept some items that are not permitted in your green bin:
- Pesticides
- Fluorescent tubes & low energy light bulbs – Please take these to Bidston HWRC
- Paint – See Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at Home
- Plaster & Plasterboard (Gypsum) – Please take to West Kirby HWRC
- Tyres – Please take to West Kirby or Clatterbridge HWRC
Disposing of items
It is important to wrap certain items tightly when disposing of them in your green wheelie bin; food waste, nappies and other rotting waste are all examples.
Tightly bag this waste and put in your green bin. If your bin is damaged (for example if it is cracked or if the lid is missing) contact Streetscene and we will repair it.
It is very important that we only throw away rubbish which cannot be used again or that can’t be recycled. Try and think about what you do throw away. Could someone else use it?
Additional bins
If you believe that you require additional bin capacity, you must contact Streetscene, using the contact details on the right, before purchasing or presenting any additional bins.
Presenting your bin correctly:
- Present your bin at the kerbside or designated collection point by 7am on the day of collection.
- Ensure handles are facing the road.
- Ensure the lid is shut.
- Ensure all waste is contained within the bin, no side waste is to be presented.
- Once your bin has been collected, please bring it back onto your property at the earliest opportunity.
Please label all of your bins with your house number and road name. This will help to prevent it from getting lost or stolen on collection days and will also help prevent contamination of your bins by other people.
Bins left out for long periods of time with no address on may be considered abandoned and be removed.
Missed Bins
If your bin goes missing on the day of collection, please contact Streetscene by phone (0151 606 2004), email (streetscene@wirral.gov.uk) or online, by 5pm the next working day after collection or you could be charged for a new bin (see bin charging for further details). Report a missing bin.
