Climate Change group

In 2001 Wirral Council made a public commitment to tackling climate change by becoming one of the first local authorities to sign up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change.

By doing so it joined many other local authorities which have made a commitment to reduce their CO2 emissions.

The declaration is a voluntary pledge which represents a high-level, broad statement of commitment that any council can make to its own community.

The declaration was originally launched in October 2000 at a conference in Nottingham with 200 leaders, chief executives and senior managers of UK local government.

2006 saw the renewal the Nottingham Declaration, Wirral Council set up a working group combining officers from key areas of the local authority such as Energy Conservation, Waste and Recycling, Transport and Procurement. The group includes many external partners.

The newly formed Wirral Climate Change Group has now been developed and has taken over from the Nottingham Declaration Working Group.

Together with existing and new strategic members we have begun to draft the Wirral Wide – Strategic Climate Change Action Plan (this is also the Local Strategic Partnership delivery plan) which will help to address National Indicator 186.

As well as officers from the Council the newly formed group now includes partners from the Wirral NHS Foundation Trust, Merseytravel, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Merseyside Police, VCAW, Forum Housing Association, Groundwork Merseyside and Transition Town West Kirby.
