General (parliamentary) elections
Current legislation states that a parliamentary general election must take place within five years of the last general election and the government may call a general election at anytime during that five year period.
The local results from the last general election, which was held on Thursday 6th May 2010, are available elsewhere on this website.
There are four parliamentary constituencies in the borough of Wirral. They are:
- Birkenhead
- Wallasey
- Wirral South
- Wirral West
Each constituency is represented by one MP (Member of Parliament).
You can find out more about your local MP in the Members of Parliament section of this website.
European Parliamentary elections are held every five years, normally in June, with the next election due to take place in 2014.
At a European election, people vote for a political party instead of candidates and the number of seats that a party gets depends on the share of the vote that it receives in each region.
There are 12 regions in the UK and Wirral is in the North West region which has eight MEPs, all of whom represent the interests of Wirral people.
You can view the results of the last European election, which were hed on 4th June 2009, on the northwestvotes website.
A by-election, or casual vacancy, can occur due to the resignation or death of a councillor or member of parliament.
The last by-election was to Wirral Council on 26th November 2009 in the Moreton West and Saughall Massie Ward.
Candidates must meet certain criteria if they intend to run for office.
