Marriages subject to immigration control
If one or both people planning to be married are subject to immigration control, they will both have to attend together at a designated register office. The nearest designated office to Wirral is Liverpool Register Office, appointments can be booked on (0151) 233 4967.
They will be able to attend these designated offices regardless of the district in which they live, providing they have 8 days residence within a registration district in England and Wales.
A person is subject to immigration control if they are a foreign national (that is not a British citizen or a national of an EEA country) who doesn’t have a certificate of entitlement giving him or her the right of abode in the UK. Anyone in this position will need to have one of the following before they can give notice:
-
A fiance(e) or marriage visitor visa in their passport. These visas are granted at the British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in the country they come from or are normally resident in.
- Settled status in the UK, such as indefinite leave to remain or,
- a certificate of approval to give a notice to marry from the Home Office. To qualify a person must normally have been granted leave to enter or remain in the UK for more than 6 months on their current visa and 3 months of that leave must remain.
