Drugs and alcohol

Alcohol crime - empty cans on streetIn 2008, Wirral’s Joint Community Safety Team developed a system that provides support and guidance to young people and their parents where alcohol has been shown to affect their behaviour.

This advice and support is available to young people in a range of circumstances, such as when they have alcohol taken from them by Police, or when young people are taken to Arrowe Park Hospital suffering from the effects of alcohol.

To reduce the impact of drugs on our communities, police operations continue to target and prosecute people involved in the supply of controlled drugs. This activity is supported by school and community drugs awareness events, aimed at providing advice and increasing awareness of available services and support.

The Drug Intervention Programme provides treatment for offenders who use Class A drugs. In Wirral, the programme dealt with more than 3,000 people in 2008 - 2009. Engagement in the programme equals the best nationally and 67% of those who were engaged did not re-offend. We also have in place a programme to deal with those who, despite receiving treatment and support, continue to offend.
