Citizenship ceremonies

Under the Nationality Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 all people applying for naturalization as a British Citizen must attend a citizenship ceremony.

How do I arrange a Citizenship Ceremony?

When you receive your letter of approval from the Home Office you should telephone the Wirral Register Office on (0151) 606 2020 to arrange your ceremony date. Your ceremony MUST take place within 3 months of Home Office approval.

Wirral Register Office will then send you a letter giving full details of the ceremony. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire to tell the Register Office what you need.

How long does the ceremony take?

You must arrive 30 minutes before your allocated start time so that we can check all your documentation. The ceremony itself lasts about 30 minutes.

What do I need to bring with me?

You need to bring your Home Office letter and photo ID, preferably your passport.

Can I bring any guests?

Yes, up to two guests are welcome, but please let us know beforehand when you complete the questionnaire that is sent to you.

What happens at the ceremony?

You will be welcomed by Register Office staff, who will check your documentation before accompanying you to the ceremony room. The ceremony is conducted by the Superintendent Registrar, and applicants will be asked to swear or affirm allegiance to the Sovereign and make an oath of loyalty. You will then be presented with your nationality certificate and an information pack.

Light refreshments will be available for you and your guests before the ceremony.

Can I have a Private Ceremony?

Individual or family ceremonies are available but an extra fee is charged for this service. Please telephone 0151 606 2020 for more information.
