General Searches of the Indexes
If you provide accurate details of a register entry, but we can't find the record, Register Office staff will search over a 5 year period (two before and two after the year you stated).

If a wider search is required you will need to pay for a general search.

You can make an appointment to come and do a general search of our indexes for up to six hours but you will not be able to see the registers.

A charge is made for a copy of each certificate you want.

To make an appointment to undertake a ‘General Search’ of the indexes please telephone 0151 606 2020.

Information about General searches is also shown on the back of application forms for copy certificates.
