FIS: How to Become a Childcare Provider

To help you become registered you will receive the following support from the Local Authority:

  • Pre-registration briefing – this gives you some background information about Ofsted and how to register as a childcare provider.
  • Training & support workshop – further support for setting up and managing your business
  • Continuing support following registration
  • Professional Development  opportunities
  • Wide range of training opportunities.
  • 12 hr mandatory Paediatric First Aid course
  • 12 hr Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) training course. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework is necessary before registration (training available )
  • Safeguarding training course
  • Common core skills training course

Ofsted Registration 

You can choose which age group of children you wish to be registered to care for.

  • If you wish to care for children aged from birth to the 31st August following their 5th birthday you must register on the Early Years Register
  • If you wish to care for children aged 6 and 7, you must register on the ofsted Compulsory part of the Childcare Register
  • If you wish to care for children aged 8 and over or children in their own home, you may register on the Ofsted Voluntary part of the Childcare Register.

Applying to Ofsted

Upon Ofsted receiving your application and health check forms, this will trigger your Criminal Records Bureau disclosure checks, and your registration visit. An Inspector will contact you to arrange a registration visit

When all the checks and actions are complete Ofsted will send you either:

  • A letter granting registration and your registration certificate setting out conditions of registration

  • A notice of intention to refuse registration:
