Special Education Needs - Transport
For children up to 16 years of age (end of year 11) the Authority will provide assistance to the nearest appropriate special school or special class based within a mainstream school from the child's home.
"Appropriate" being defined as "appropriate to meet the special educational needs of the child as specified in the child's Statement."
Assistance will be provided by way of:
- A travel pass, where the child/student is capable of travelling independently on public transport.
- A vehicle suitable to meet the child's / student's needs, which is under contract to or owned by the Authority, with consideration to any specialist equipment.
Depending on the age and needs of the children/students these journeys may be escorted.
For students with special educational needs aged 16 to 19 travel assistance will be provided for students to any school or college, who have a Statement of special needs up to the age of 19 and to the end of the summer term following their 19th birthday. Students who are already aged 19 at the commencement of the autumn term, will not be entitled to receive travel assistance whether or not they hold a statement of special needs.
