Educational Social and Communication Support Service

Core Work (mainstream schools – 5-16+ age range) 

  • To advise and support schools staff on specific and appropriate targets and strategies for pupils with diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Asperger Syndrome or with Social and Communication Difficulties
  • To liaise with professionals/parents/carers
  • To monitor/review progress (Review and Individual Pupil Funding meetings)
  • Support transitions, especially KS2 to KS3
  • Provision of recommendations regarding future placements and support

Prioritisation of Work 

  1. Pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Need
  2. Pupils with an IPFA or at School Action Plus, with at least 5 units of support
  3. The team may also be able to offer some input at School Action

Training

Central training is provided on particular skill development, e.g. 

  • Managing TAs
  • Managing unstructured times
  • General ASD awareness
  • Delivery of Social Skills Programmes (KS1, KS2 KS3 and KS4) 

School-based training around a range of areas, e.g. 

  • ASD awareness
  • Pupil focused sessions for all staff
  • Role of teaching assistant (TA)
