Procurement fairtrade

Wirral is a Fairtrade Borough. The status is conferred by the international Fairtrade Foundation on towns, cities or boroughs that meet strict criteria on the availability of Fairtrade products. With Wirral Council support, the community-led Wirral LA21 Network has worked for two years to achieve the status through a publicity campaign and extensive work in schools.

Goods bearing the distinctive Fairtrade logo are sourced direct from farmers in the developing world at fair prices – ensuring they receive enough to cover the cost of production and supporting projects in their local community. Products must meet a strict set of criteria relating to fair wages, minimum health and safety standards, fair prices paid to producers, a long term trading commitment and good environmental standards. A variety of products are available meeting Fairtrade standards including tea, coffee, chocolate and cocoa.

Fairtrade is highlighted as part of Wirral Council’s Sustainable Procurement Policy.
