Build Wirral

Wirral Council is committed to providing employment and training opportunities for local people and has launched ‘Build Wirral’ to help unemployed people and those from disadvantaged areas find work and training in the construction industry.

Businesses and organisations that are procured to provide services or works on behalf of Wirral Council now have to provide training and employment opportunities for local people, where possible.

What does this involve?

Whoever carries out the work will have to offer a number of employment and training places for targeted recruitment and training. To assist the process a skills forecasting model is used which forms the basis for the number of possible training positions for each individual project.

Any opportunities are aimed at people who are currently out of work and who would benefit from work or training in the construction industry. Some of these may be from disadvantaged areas or backgrounds.

There are 3 types of opportunities that are applicable:

  • Job opportunities- for fixed term employment such as general operatives; labourers etc.
  • Work experience –  unpaid work placements
  • Apprenticeships or trainee positions.

It is crucial that suitable candidates are recruited for these opportunities; this is in the interests of the Developer, the Council and the contractors.

To ensure this happens, Wirral Metropolitan College an organisation who have an excellent track record in training and support will provide assistance to employers and participants.

The college will work with employers to match the right people to the jobs and training positions. Employers will still be able to select their candidates through the normal interview process, which the college can facilitate.
