Evacuation

Not all evacuation is long term, sometimes you can return to your residence within a few hours once the emergency is over. However in the event of severe flooding or a chemical incident, then you may not be allowed back into you property until decontamination and drying out has taken place. You may need to be re housed.

Talk to your family and friends about the possibility of an evacuation and make arrangements. If you need to go far, plan how you are going to get there. Remember allow for traffic congestions/restrictions.

Follow the advice from the emergency services or experts, if you need to evacuate they will tell you how and where to go.

Take your emergency supply kit/pack.

Before you leave:

  • Turn off your water mains
  • Drain taps
  • Close and lock windows
  • Lock your house
  • If long term then switch off power but remember to remove food from your fridge and freezer.

Children at school
If there is a major incident you will want to collect your children as soon as possible. However this might not be safe to do so. You are advised to tune into your local radio which will be issuing details and arrangements for collecting children from schools.

All schools have plans in place to deal with emergencies and children will be looked after.

Pets
If you are told to evacuate, leave pets behind where possible. They will need to have sufficient water supply for a couple of days.

If you must take your pet with you, make sure you have a secure pet carrier or leash and be sure you pet has proper identification tag fastened to the collar.
