Major incident response
Major emergencies can happen quickly and without warning. They have the potential to threaten and disrupt the lives of individuals, businesses and the community, sometimes with serious consequences. It is important that Wirral Council remains operational in an emergency. We have plans in place to support and protect Wirral in the event of an emergency and ensure essential services are kept going at all times.
Wirral Council works closely with the emergency services and other partner agencies such as the Environment Agency in the development and delivery of local emergency plans.
The main responsibilities for these agencies are listed below:

- Protection of life and property
- Co-ordination of the overall response
- Co-ordination of evacuation
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service 0151 296 4000
- Tackling fires
- Rescue of trapped casualties
- Dealing with chemical incidents and spillages
- Have the capability of rapid pumping of huge quantities of water out of flooded areas
- Decontamination of victims
- Treatment and transportation of casualties to hospitals
- Co-ordination of overall medical response
- De-contamination of patients

- Supports the emergency response with a range of services
- Cares for individuals and the community, in the initial response and during the return to normality
Voluntary Organisations
- Supports the emergency services and community
- Examples include British Red Cross Society, St John Ambulance, Women’s Royal Voluntary Service, The
- Samaritans and the RSPCA

- Responsible for protecting and improving the environment of England & Wales
- Responsibility for protecting communities from the risk of flooding and managing watercourses
Wirral Council provides a beach/ coast lifeguard service seasonally, from Easter until the end of September. We maintain a close working relationship with H.M. Coastguards, the R.N.L.I. and the Emergency Services and have the specialist radio equipment necessary to achieve this.
