Industrial Incidents

In the event of any major accident / hazard, such as a chemical spill or explosion, you may be instructed to either stay indoors or evacuate your premises. If you live near an industrial site you should be told if there are special emergency arrangements for your area.

In the event of evacuation :

  • Follow instructions from the emergency services

Remember to take with you: (if time allows)

  • Warm clothing
  • Medication and toiletries
  • Any important documents
  • Accessories for pets
  • Your emergency kit

Release of Gas or Toxic Chemical or Radiation:

Go indoors unless you are advised to leave by the Emergency Services. It is worth remembering that with some toxic fumes everything will look normal and you will not see, smell or feel anything different

  • Close all doors and windows
  • Extinguish all naked flames, e.g. pilot lights
  • Switch off gas supplies
  • Put away or cover all fresh food
  • Have your emergency provisions ready
  • Do not use the telephone unless absolutely necessary – keep lines free for emergency use only

Stay indoors until you know more about the situation and the appropriate action you need to take to protect yourself further.

If you think you may have become contaminated, please contact the emergency services and they will provide decontamination facilities. They will ask you to remove all clothing and showering in portable shower units. Replacement dry clothing will be given to you. You should wait for special advice before you leave.
