Councillor Tony Smith

Councillor Tony Smith was born in Carlow, Ireland. The eldest of three children he was educated in Ireland and at Heythrop Jesuit College in Oxfordshire. He is a qualified teacher having trained at Christ’s College Liverpool. He subsequently went on to study for a BA Honours in Psychology and an MSc in Educational Psychology. After teaching for 8 years in primary education he worked as an Educational Psychologist for 30 years first in Sefton and then in Manchester.

Tony and Barbara were married in 1973. They have a son, a daughter and five grandchildren.

Tony was first elected to the council in 1995 as the member for Bebington Ward and has served as the member for Upton Ward since 2004. He has held various roles and responsibilities including Cabinet member for Social Inclusion and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services. 

Tony has always been an active sportsman running (he completed the Dublin marathon), playing football, squash and tennis as a member of Upton tennis club. He now plays golf using municipal courses and improves his Spanish by attending classes. Tony is an enthusiastic football fan and Tony and Barbara are Liverpool season ticket holders. 

Barbara Smith

Barbara was born in Birkenhead and was educated at Sacred Heart Primary School, Maris Stella High School and Teacher Training College in Liverpool. She studied for a BA with the Open University and then an Advanced Diploma in Special Educational Needs, also with the Open University.

Barbara worked in primary education from 1966 until 2006 with a few years break when Tony and Barbara had their children.

Barbara likes to spend time with family and their five wonderful grandchildren. She has been a great supporter of adult education, attending a range of classes from languages and pottery to calligraphy. She swims regularly and enjoys gardening, reading and walking.

Tony and Barbara enjoy travelling. Ireland and Australia have been favourite destinations. They like to go to the cinema and theatre and enjoy visiting museums and galleries.
