Leaving Care Service

The Leaving Care Service exists to offer a comprehensive Leaving Care Service for those young people who are or who have been Looked After. The Service works with young people aged 16-21 (24 if the young person is completing full-time further or higher education).

Lifelong and Family Learning

Wirral Council is both a direct provider and a facilitator of Adult and Community Learning and Family Learning for the people of Wirral.

Link Forum (The)

The Link Forum is an independent body that plays an active role in influencing the shape and delivery of services on the Wirral for children and Young People.

Looked After Children

The Children and Young People's Department provides services for Looked after Children which include the support, placement and care of children and young people in the following areas: adoption, foster care and residential care and for young people leaving care.

Wirral's Local Safeguarding Children's Board (LSCB)

Wirral's Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) is the key statutory mechanism for agreeing how organisations will co-operate to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and for ensuring the effectiveness of what they do.

Matrons (Chaperones)

Matrons are sometimes referred to as chaperones.

Minority Ethnic Achievement Service (MEAS)

MEAS staff work in Primary and Secondary schools throughout the borough. The aim of the Service is to remove language barriers, provide access to the curriculum, raise self-esteem and encourage social integration.

Mobile Creche

This innovative and almost unique service is operated by the Children and Young People's Department, using a custom-built vehicle which is registered and inspected by OFSTED.

Music

There are opportunities within schools for children to learn musical instruments or have voice lessons provided by the Wirral Schools’ Music Service in groups. Music is a very popular subject at GCSE and A level.

Musical Instrument Hire

The Music Service has a limited amount of instruments available for loan whilst children have lessons with the Service. An extra charge is made for the loan over and above the cost of lessons.

Newly Qualified Teachers

Wirral schools welcome newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and have consistently attracted a healthy number of NQTs year on year.

Nursery Education

All children are entitled to a free nursery education place, currently five sessions of 2½ hours per session, for a period of 33 weeks. Children become eligible for this entitlement generally at the beginning of the term after their third birthday, although this can be affected by the occurrence of Easter in particular. This entitlement can be taken at a Local Authority children’s centre, nursery school or class or a pre-school playgroup or day nursery registered with the Local Authority to offer an early years curriculum. There are 44 schools with nursery classes, nine Children’s Centres and one nursery school.

Oaklands Centre

The Oaklands Centre is a residential outdoor adventure education centre providing activity based personal development, environmental, leadership and skills courses to schools, youth groups, scouts and guides, teachers and youth leaders, families, outdoor professionals and management teams.  

Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED)

OFSTED is a government department that inspects schools, further education, teacher training, funded nursery education in pre-school playgroups, day nurseries, private nursery schools and independent schools.  

Out of hours

Outside office hours the department operates an emergency service provided by an Emergency Duty Team on 0151 677 6557 . On occasions when the service is excessively busy, a voice message will ask the caller to telephone the police who will contact EDT by radio pager.
