Family Centres

We operate a range of Family Support Services across several Family Centre locations in Wirral.

Food Policy for Schools

A review of the current Children's and Young People's Department's Food Policy for School Meals is currently taking place. The new document is being prepared as a reference tool for Head Teachers, Governing Bodies, the School Community, and those charged with the provision of school meals in Local Authority schools.

Fostering, adopting and looked after children

The Children and Young People's Department provides services for Looked after Children which include the support, placement and care of children and young people in the following areas: adoption, foster care and residential care and for young people leaving care.

Further education opportunities are available in Wirral.

Governing Bodies

School governors in Wirral play a very important role in helping schools to improve and raise standards. There are approximately 2,000 people who volunteer to be school governors who give time, commitment and energy to the role and Wirral Local Authority values the support that governors give to schools.   

Grants – supporting families

A grant available to organisations which support and develop activities which enable families to get access to the information, help and advice they want at the time they need it. For more information contact 0151 606 2000  

Hearing Support Service

Deafness/hearing loss is a low incidence disability. Roughly speaking, one child in every thousand may have a hearing loss.

Support for children with HIV

Children and Young People’s Department and a number of voluntary organisations work with families where a child is HIV positive to deal with any immediate problems, and to help the family plan for the long term care of children.  

Holiday Playschemes (Community Centres)

We operate all year round playschemes which provide a wide range of imaginative play opportunities for children aged 5 - 14, all schemes are 'open access' and are not intended to provide supervised child care facilities.

Holiday playschemes (Summer Holidays)

We promote, with Wirral Play Council, a number of playschemes during the school summer holidays.

School - Home Schooling

A guide for parents on their responsibilities and on the role of the Local Authority.

Home Tuition

Home tuition is organised through the Wirral Hospital School and Home Teaching Service.

Hospice Care for Children

Children's hospices provide respite and terminal care for children suffering from life-limiting conditions in a home-from-home environment. Care is provided for the child and their family at no cost to them for as long as is necessary, including post bereavement support.  

ICT Development Plan

The purpose of the ICT Development Plan is: To improve the provision and use of ICT in schools, enhance learning opportunities and raise standards and facilitate effective management and communication.

CYPD – Immunisation

All children in the UK are offered vaccination against certain diseases such as diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella etc. as part of the childhood immunisation schedule.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a process, that is to say a never-ending search to find better ways of responding to diversity. It is about learning to live with difference and learning how to live with differences. It is about ensuring that every individual can reach their potential, can perform to the best of their ability, and can feel valued and respected as a member of their community.

Instrumental Music Service

The Music Service of the Children and Young People's Department provide vocal and instrumentals to children in schools. It operates three Saturday and one mid-week centres for all aspects of music-making such as bands and orchestras. In addition it offers senior and intermediate ensembles for the more accomplished musician. These groups frequently give concerts in and around Wirral and also nationally and internationally.

Instrumental Provision - Assisted Purchase

The Service offers an assisted purchase scheme that enables parents/carers to purchase a musical instrument through the council at a reduced cost.

Integrated Working

Services for children and young people are delivered most effectively if staff working with them use processes that are common and integrated.

International Students – information and advice

Wirral Children and Young People’s Department organises a variety of initiatives based on the Department for Children, Schools & Families International Dimension Strategy. These initiatives play an important role in helping to increase cultural awareness and an understanding of the differences and similarities of people from different countries.
