Welcome To Wirral
Fly Tipping
Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste onto any land that is not an authorised waste disposal site. Whether it's a bag of waste, a tyre, an old sofa or mattress, or drums of chemicals that are dumped, it's a serious offence. Dumping hazardous materials not only causes a danger to other people but can cause long-term damage to the highway, land and watercourses. It is illegal and we will prosecute anyone found fly tipping.
Disposal of your waste
If you need to dispose of large items that will not fit in wheelie bins, you need to use the ERIC service, private contractor or visit one of Wirral’s household waste reception centres. Check that any private company is a registered waste carrier, if not there is a likelihood that your waste will end up dumped somewhere and you could be held responsible.
What action will be taken
Fly tipping which is left on the roadside, pavements and public land will be removed by the Council. It is the responsibility of the land owner to remove fly tipping from their own land and prevent further reoccurrence.
The Council have served many fixed penalty notices on littering offenders and have also prosecuted individuals and businesses who have illegally deposited waste in Wirral since the introduction of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act in 2005.
We will always try to trace the origin of the waste to identify who deposited it and when the waste was dumped. Offenders can be required to pay full clean up costs to the Council for removing the waste as well as facing prosecution in the courts.
If an area is continually used for fly tipping, the Council and the Environment Agency have sophisticated technology which allows us to carry out high- tech surveillance of these sites.
What you can do to help?
- take vehicle registration details;
- note the time and location;
- take a description of what waste you have witnessed being dumped;
- take a description of the people dumping the waste;
- use a camera phone or camera if you have one on you; this will be really helpful when prosecuting offenders;
- do not approach anyone who you witness fly tipping
- contact us straight away.
