Welcome To Wirral

Fly Tipping

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste onto land. Whether it's a bag of waste, a tyre or an old sofa or mattress, or drums of chemicals that are dumped, it's a serious offence. The dumping of any waste may be treated as fly tipping. Dumping hazardous materials not only causes a danger to other people now but can cause long-term damage to the highway, land and watercourses. It is illegal and we will prosecute anyone found fly tipping.

If you need to dispose of large items that will not fit in wheelie bins, you need to use the ERIC service, private contractor or visit one of Wirral’s household waste reception centres. Check that any private company is a registered waste carrier, if not there is a likelihood that your waste will end up dumped somewhere and you could be held responsible.

To report instances of fly tipping please contact Streetscene on 0151 606 2004.

Fly tipping which is left on the roadside, pavements and public land will be removed by the Council. It is the responsibility of the land owner to remove fly tipping from their own land and prevent further occurrences.

The Council have served many fixed penalty notices on littering offenders and have also prosecuted individuals and businesses who have illegally deposited waste in Wirral since the introduction of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act in 2005.

We will always try to trace the origin of the waste to identify who deposited it and when the waste was dumped. These offenders can be required to pay full clean up costs to the council for removing the waste as well as receiving a fine of up to £50,000 and up to five years imprisonment. Fly tipping is now an arrestable offence and vehicles used in such offence can be seized by the council and other authorities.

Fly tipping hot spots

If an area is continually used for fly tipping, we, as well as the Environment Agency, have sophisticated technology which allows us to carry out high- tech surveillance of these sites.

What you can do to help to stop fly tipping or prosecute an offender:

  • take vehicle registration details;
  • note the time and location;
  • take a description of what waste you have witnessed being dumped;
  • take a description of the people dumping the waste;
  • use a camera phone or camera if you have one on you; this will be really helpful when prosecuting offenders;
  • do not approach anyone who you witness fly tipping unless it is safe to do so or you have help at hand
  • contact us straight away.
