Welcome To Wirral

Street Litter

Dropped litter can last a very long time when it enters the waste stream. For example, a plastic bottle can last indefinitely; aluminum cans 80-100 years; plastic bags will last 10-20 years; and even biodegradable items such as orange peel, apple cores, banana skins and cigarette butts can last up to two years.

Dropping litter anywhere in the open-air is an offence and is punishable in Wirral by a fixed penalty fine of £75. The Council provides litter bins in public areas throughout Wirral for you to put litter in, depending on how busy the area is the bins are still emptied two or three times a week. The council has to spend millions of pounds of your council tax a year on street cleaning to clear up after a minority of people who have no respect for the environment.

You can help to keep your environment clean – don’t drop litter!

You can:

  • keep hold of your waste until you find a bin - or take it home with you
  • recycle your waste materials, whenever possible
  • clean up immediately after your pet, if it fouls our streets or park
  • report discarded litter or mess on the streets

Remember it is a crime to:

  • drop any form of litter including (but not only) wrappers and packaging, chewing gum, spit, cigarettes, other tobacco products and flyers left on windscreens. It is also a crime to throw litter out of a moving vehicle or allow passengers to do so
  • allow any animal under your responsibility, to foul the roads, pavements or open green spaces
