Speed Limits

The Traffic Management Unit is responsible for speed limits on all public roads, except motorways which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency.

The criteria for setting the right limit for any road takes into account factors such as the existing traffic speed, accident history, level of traffic, frequency of junctions and building development and amenities that attract cyclists and pedestrians.

Speed limits currently in force are:-

20mph these can be introduced on their own or as part of an urban safety strategy on a zonal basis. The latter involves self enforcing measures such as speed humps, road texture and narrowing of the carriageway.

30mph is commonplace in built-up areas such as city streets, towns and built up residential areas. Hazards such as junctions, inadequate visibility, pedestrian crossings, schools and recreational grounds support the need for 30mph speed limits.

40mph is used in similar built-up areas to the 30mph limit, but where the traffic hazards cause less risk of accidents. For example, buildings may be set back from the road and there may be grass verges between the buildings and roads.

50 and 60mph are made on high standard roads where the area has become lightly built up with some frontage development. The traffic composition is likely to be light in terms of pedestrian and cycle activity, and crossings are provided by means of subways and bridges.
