Welcome To Wirral
Road closures
Road closures are needed for a number of reasons. The most common of these is a temporary arrangement for the public utilities (gas, water, electricity suppliers) when they wish to carry out road works in the area.
However the Council also handles temporary road closures for street parties, major Wirral events, such as the annual Wirral Show, and for building demolition and use of heavy duty cranes, etc.
If you are planning something that could impact on traffic flow on Wirral’s roads it is essential that you contact us for advice beforehand.
How do I request a temporary road closure?
You will need to send in a written request to the Director of Technical Services Department. Please provide us with details of where you need the temporary closure, when you need the closure, how long for, and the reason why.
Your request will be assessed and if appropriate you will be asked to meet with our traffic management engineers on site.
If approved, you will be asked to take steps to inform nearby residents and the local police.
Requests for street parties can be handled by telephone. Call our Streetscene telephone advisors for more information by phoning 606 2004.
Is there a charge for this service?
There is a charge for this service - to cover legal costs and the involvement from our traffic management team in organising any necessary diversions.
We do not charge for road closures for street parties, charities or community events.
How much notice do you need?
We need a minimum of six week’s notice.
However, we would urge that you contact the Council with as much notice as possible. If your request is for a major closure, you could face a delay if the closure needs to go before elected members for approval.
Can any road get a temporary road closure?
Anyone can apply, but each request is considered on its own merit. We need to take into account disruption to traffic, seasonality issues, safety implications, etc.
Can I request a permanent road closure?
These include:
Closures of alleyways.
Closures for adopted highway for members of the public.
Closures to allow development to take place.
These are dealt with on an individual basis, following strict legal guidelines and involving public consultation.
